Start-ups Learn to Fly at Cocoon HK

"This is where all the action is!!" has become a popular reason for why people come to live and work in Hong Kong. Because of its proximity to China which fuels growth in every conceivable sector, affordable talent, low tax rate and accessible capital, Hong Kong has attracted many international companies to setup their Asian headquarters here here. And yet, creative work and entrepreneurship is only in its infancy in Hong Kong where talents are either lured into banking and consulting or trained to become lawyers and doctors. The American Dream is not a popular concept in Hong Kong where Chinese parents prefer their children to make stable incomes in a Fortune 500. However, following the financial crisis in 2002 and later in 2008, the financial industry has started to lose talent to start-ups, which is fueling the entrepreneurial spirit in Hong Kong. Supporting this trend are the founders of Cocoon, an open-architecture working space that strives to link start-ups with investors and mentors. With 14,000 sq ft of eco-friendly space equipped with work desks, meeting rooms and a large break room with a ping-pong and coffee bar. Cocoon is located in North Point, Hong Kong and currently accepting members and allowing them to use the space for free until the end of September. (www.cocoonhk.org)
